In Bengaluru, Aecoz, a sustainable startup launched in 2020 by siblings Dhanvita
Sathyanand, Bharath Sathyanand, and Srinidhi Rajaram, is tackling one of India’s biggest
environmental challenges—single-use plastic in the food industry. Their innovative solution?
Durable, biodegradable paper packaging that’s strong enough for hot Indian food and
safe for the planet.
How Plastic Waste Sparked an Eco-Friendly Vision
India produces more than 3.5 lakh tonnes of single-use plastic every year, much of it from
takeaway containers, plates, and cups. Seeing the mounting plastic waste, the founders of
Aecoz decided to create packaging that would not only be functional for food businesses but
also break down naturally without harming the environment.
How Coated Paper Became the Solution
Aecoz uses high-quality paper reels sourced from trusted suppliers and coats them with a
food-grade, water-based layer. This special coating makes the packaging leak-proof,
heat-resistant, and safe for direct contact with food. Most importantly, it’s 98%
biodegradable within 180 days—a big leap toward sustainable food packaging.
How Testing Won Over Big Clients
Before launching, the team carried out rigorous trials to ensure their packaging could handle
India’s hot and oily dishes. They tested it with boiling curries, rasam, and gravies, checking
for leaks, sogginess, and structural integrity during long delivery times. The success of these
tests attracted well-known clients, including popular restaurant chains and luxury hotels.
How Technology Scales the Process
Aecoz operates a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru equipped with high-heat forming
machines that work at around 350 °C. These machines can produce 40–45 containers per
minute, across sizes from small 50 ml cups to large 1000 ml bowls. This technology ensures
consistent quality while meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging.
How They’re Making Sustainability Affordable
While biodegradable packaging was once considered too expensive for small businesses,
Aecoz has worked to make their prices competitive with, and sometimes even lower than,
traditional plastic alternatives. This approach has helped more food outlets, from street
vendors to big brands, switch to eco-friendly packaging without increasing costs.
How They’re Creating Real Environmental Impact
By 2024, Aecoz had already produced over 4.5 crore biodegradable packaging units. This
shift has replaced more than 4 lakh kg of plastic in the food industry. The company has
also expanded internationally, including into the UK, where the demand for sustainable
packaging continues to rise.
How Aecoz Inspires a Circular Future
Aecoz is proof that sustainability and performance can work hand in hand. By combining
thoughtful design, advanced technology, and a clear environmental mission, they’ve shown
how innovation can lead to practical, large-scale change—benefiting both businesses and
the planet.
